The Town of Gibsons is working with the RCMP and Province of British Columbia to bring a new policing facility to the community by September 2011. The proposed facility will be located on a piece of property adjacent to Brothers Park along Highway 101 at Sunnycrest Road.  This will be one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the Town in a generation and have a lasting impact on community building, town spirit, and public safety.

Overview

Part of the 2009-2011 Strategic Plan, developed by Council and the management team, the second most important strategic objective identified was “to provide a safe community”.  A safe community is one which believes that a safe life is a basic right.  Through the provision of community services, education and leadership, we hope to foster a safer community for everyone.  One of the priorities identified was to construct a new Police building in Gibsons, to establish a strong and visible Police presence and to improve Police support in Gibsons.
Please look at our Facts Sheets for more information on the many benefits to the community.
Budget and Loan Authorization Bylaw
At the September 7, 2010 Regular Meeting, Council will consider 1st , 2nd and 3rd reading of the loan authorization bylaw.  Once the bylaw is given 3 readings, it will be presented to the Ministry of Community Development for approval.  Once approved, the Ministry of Community Development will provide the Town with the authorization to proceed with the Alternate Approval Process or Referendum to borrow the funds needed.

Alternate Approval Process

At the September 21, 2010 Regular Meeting, Council will consider staff’s recommendation to proceed with either an Alternate Approval Process or referendum to borrow funds, to pay for the construction of the new RCMP facility.  If the Alternate Approval Process is approved, staff will set a time line and begin with advertising and publishing an elector response form.

Building Construction & Design

At the Special Meeting held on September 24, 2010, Council considered staff recommendations and awarded the design-build contract for the proposed construction of a new Police Services Facility to Burtnick Enterprises Ltd.
