The Town of Gibsons tests its drinking water on a regular basis. The goal is to supply and deliver potable water to customers within the Town’s boundaries. There are many tests that are carried out to ensure that the drinking water supplied to Gibsons is of top quality. Water Sampling Reports - April 2011

Water Tests of Gibsons
The three main tests that Gibsons carries out to monitor its drinking water quality are:
1) Water Potability Test
Potability tests are used as indicators for bacteriological, chemical and physical contamination. These contaminants may have an adverse effect on health or may be related to aesthetic concerns. Gibsons tests its well water for potability at the wells and the SCRD water before it enters into Gibsons' system at the testing site S-1. The test parameters for the SCRD water differ greatly from the well water parameters. This is because the SCRD water is treated surface water which includes a chlorinating process and it is tested for chlorinated byproducts. These tests are carried out annually but have been done quarterly in the past. To view the potability test results of Gibsons's well water or the SCRD water, click on the following links.

The BC Ministry of Environment provides ground water quality fact sheets that describe the results of these tests, including general information on nitrate, arsenic, fluoride, sodium, iron and manganese, and hardness.
2) Wells Reservoir Test
Total and fecal coliforms are tested more frequently at the wells because the presence of coliforms indicates the possibility of bacterial regrowth or fecal contamination. These tests are carried out at the sources every month.

The BC Ministry of Environment also provides ground water quality fact sheets that describe the results of these tests, including general information on total and fecal coliform bacteria. The fact sheet has sections on what these bacteria are, where they come from, what the health concerns are, and what to do when there are higher levels of coliforms.
3) Water Distribution Network Test
In addition to monitoring water quality at the well sources, water quality must also be monitored in the distribution system to ensure contaminants are not entering the piping network; these tests are carried out bi-weekly.
